Mrs. Katie Johnson To All Instructors

It has been an incredible 20 years of homeschooling this year, and I truly feel that it is an amazing opportunity to educate my children at home.  Not only has it been a blessing to be able to teach at my own my 3 children, but several dozen students from different co-op groups as well as classes at the Elburn library; it has been surreal and so completely fulfilling!

I am a graduate from Northeastern University with a MA in Special Education teaching and a BA in Elementary Education with a minor in science. Way back when, I taught science and math at a Christian School in Norridge, IL and special education resource in Norridge and the St. Charles school districts. When I had my daughter, I knew I would never be able to let a school bus whisk her off into the unknown, and so I decided to leave the “work” world, and become a home educator.  I honestly love to teach, and to connect with students, and through teaching my children and co-op groups, I have certainly been able to achieve this.

My oldest has graduated from NIU with a biology degree, minoring in chemistry and Spanish; my middle child will be a Junior at NIU in the business program, he works at Christ Community Church; my youngest is in 11th grade, and teetering on whether or not he wants to attend the local public school or continue to homeschool- I am praying with him about this.

As I have said, in addition to teaching my own children, I have also taught at several co-op groups, teaching various ages/grades and subjects.  CWF in Elgin was my first co-op where I taught for 11 years, it has since dismantled; I was also a board member for 7 of those years.  Some of the moms from that co-op and I formed a “mini” co-op with 15 of our children.  Then I taught at One Room co-op in Elgin for 4 years, as well as at Heritage Homeschool Workshops since 2019.  For the past 5 years (minus the Covid 2020 season), I have been teaching homeschool science classes at the Elburn Library for 1-3rd graders and 4th-6th grades.

At the co-ops I have mainly taught science all across the board- biology, chemistry, physics, and physical science, for all grades from preschool/ kindergarten, to elementary students, middle school and high school students. I have also taught history, both world and American with the constitution, gym classes, and nature classes.

I enjoy teaching for the love of learning.  My classes always begin with prayer, as I am always in need for the most perfect guide.  I listen to what God has in store for my lessons and I do believe He always provides fun and purpose to each class.

I love to read, to watch my son’s baseball games, play games with family (my kids and I have been trying to win at Pandemic since 2020!) and fellowshipping with friends.

This is going to be a great school year!!
